David Patrick – Asian Security Systems Theory and Operation

Today’s Asian vehicle security systems are much more than a motion detector and an alarm. Current systems not only have the ability to sound an alarm, but they can render the vehicle completely inoperable. Because of the complex and integrated nature of these systems, many technicians can get lost diagnosing problems or, can create problems from simple actions such as replacing a key. This course covers Asian vehicle security systems and identifies the various tools needed to properly diagnose, service, and repair the systems.

Chris Peace – Duramax 6600 Diesel Engine

This three-hour seminar will focus on unique features of the Duramax 6600 diesel engine. Engine design, lubrication, cooling, turbocharger, electric air heater, glow plug, common rail fuel and engine management systems are covered in detail. The seminar will focus on aspects of the common rail fuel system including injector testing & service, injector pump, fuel injection, control module testing and system service. Inputs and outputs as they relate to the Duramax system will also be covered. This seminar will also cover the diesel particulate filter found on the 2007 LMM engine.

Aaron Stokes – ARO Killers

Simple systems for increasing your ARO. Shop owners and advisors will learn some simple key steps to raise the average repair which in turn will boosts profits. You will learn from Aaron Stokes who is known as an Operational Guru in the automotive aftermarket.

Craig VanBatenburg – CAN Bus and Sensors For The Confused

This class is based on the Army Man model from last year’s show. ACDC will explain in the simplest of ways how sensors work, what a CAN bus does and where the problems start. WE will cover both conventional and sensors used in Hybrids.

Dirk Fuchs  – Volkswagen DSG Transmission

The class starts with the fundamental facts about a double clutch systems. The double clutch is a wet clutch system and the participants will learn how this technology works as well as common failures and diagnostics. The attendees will gain full working knowledge of the DSG transmission.

David Patrick – Current Probe Revisited

Using amperage waveforms to diagnose electrical circuits is certainly not new. Technicians are routinely faced with the need to utilize an inductive amp probe to measure current. Proper diagnosis depends on not only operational knowledge of the amp probe, but a thorough understanding of the circuit being measured. In this course, CTI will revisit tips and techniques we have discussed in many of our diagnostic courses as well as introduce new techniques such as using a micro amp probe to diagnose circuits such as reference voltage and wide band air/fuel sensors.

Chris Peace – Diesel Emissions and the Aftertreatment

Modern diesel engines are subject to increasingly stringent emission regulations and monitoring requirements. This three-hour seminar will prepare technicians to effectively diagnose and repair diesel exhaust emission reduction failures by developing an understanding of the emissions created by diesel engines and the systems designed to reduce those emissions. Both pre- and after-treatment systems will be covered. Specific systems and components will include intake air swirl and heating, glow plugs, exhaust gas recirculation, oxidation catalysts, diesel particulate filtration, NOx reduction technologies, selective catalyst reduction, and diesel exhaust fluid. Technicians will strengthen their diagnostic techniques by focusing on the conditions used by the Engine Control Module (ECM) to set codes related to these systems, developing an understanding of how false codes could be set, and determining the root cause of any code or failure. Common failures will be covered.

Jim Morton – Maximizing Your Lab Scope Efficiency

Many technicians don’t know the full capability of the lab scope and how it can be used to it’s maximum. View actual screenshots of waveforms and what the “picture” is telling you about the circuit. Understand the pros and cons of voltage over time waveforms and current over time waveforms. This presentation will include, but not limited to learning how to use the lab scope for basic engine integrity testing and the latest procedures of adding pressure transducers to the lab scope for Variable valve timing issues. If you are already using a lab scope or thinking about it, this presentation will be extremely useful for your bottom line profit.

Craig VanBatenburg – High Voltage Battery Packs

This class is based on ACDCs own research into NiMH and Li-ion based cells that make up a HV battery pack. What fails, how to prevent it from failing. How to diagnose it and fix it.  Where is the future going in terms for EVs range and charge times?        

 

Dirk Fuchs – Modern Chassis Technology

The foundations of chassis dynamics are reviewed. Details of how the chassis angles, such as toe, caster and camber, are influenced with different settings. Concluding with a short summary of Kamm’s circle.

The competitive advantages and disadvantages of all chassis systems will be presented. The latest and most complicated system, the multi-link system, will be discussed in detail, as well fitting instructions for control arms and shock absorbers for the suspension system. Electro-mechanical steering solutions will be summarized. The main focus is on the most popular electro-mechanical steering racks, namely axial parallel actuation (APA) and dual pinon type (DP). Explanations about the functions, diagnostics and the sensors will be covered. The initialization and activation procedure will be discussed. Dynamic steering systems have an impact on the steering angle. This confirms there is a correlation between the steering wheel angle and the tire wheel angle.

All assistance systems which have an influence on the steering system will be described. An overview about the abbreviations, such as ACC, PLA, Line Assist, Emergency braking and DSR, will be given. This module will end with the functions and impacts of radar and camera systems on this systems, and how to do a basic setting of this sensors.

David Patrick – Ford EcoBoost Platforms Operation and Diagnosis

Since 2010 Ford has been putting the majority of their engineering efforts into the EcoBoost family of engines. Designed to satisfy a worldwide market, these engines have added over 128 patents to Fords development portfolio. Offering displacements from 1.0 liter to 3.5 liter, Ford expects this engine family to be an option for up to 90% of their vehicles. This class will present the operation and diagnostic techniques the aftermarket will need to service this massive segment of the repair market. Each major system of the EcoBoost will be covered using not only OE tooling but capable aftermarket scan tools and techniques. Topics will include: • Engine mechanical highlights • Fuel system operation and diagnosis • Ignition system operation and diagnosis • Air Induction and turbocharging • Emission components and monitoring strategies • Network configuration and reprogramming • Current service issues

Aaron Stokes – How to Grow

Craig VanBatenburg – Electric Cars; Chevy Bolt, Tesla S and BMW i3

ACDC has had hands-on training on these 3 EVs. We own a Bolt that has a range of over 230 miles per charge. These popular EVs are very different in how they build their battery packs. We will closely examine the drive systems and how
they are repaired.

Dirk Fuchs – 8 Speed Hybrid Transmission

The participant will gain full working knowledge of the 9 Speed Automatic Hybrid Transmission. Topics like torque flow, electric motor, clutch K0 and shifting elements will be covered. The different applications of brakes and clutches in the mechatronic will be discussed. This will transition into the function of the pressure regulator and solenoid. The greatest take away from the presentation is that the audience understands how the electric motor works and gets engaged as well as disengaged from the combustion engine. How the transmission shifts and how to read the specific shifting matrix will be thought.

The presenter will explain what an adaptation is and how to read it with a general diagnostic tool. They will be taught what those values mean and how to identify a mechanical transmission fault, such as a burned clutch or hydraulic pressure loss. In addition, the Limp Home function and coding issues will be discussed. Internal shift and external transmission faults will be presented. Through the use of these learning methods, common errors can be quickly diagnosed.

The participants will be introduced to different possibilities of oil change service. In the last part of this presentation the participants will receive step by step instruction on how to effectively take apart, and then assemble this transmission.

After completing this training the participant will be able to:

Rick White – The Customer Says “NO!” Now What?

In a typical shop sales scenario, the Service Advisor hears “NO!” and lets the customer walk out with a broken car and the shop’s reputation. Bottom line: it’s the end of the transaction and quite possibly the relationship as well. No one likes rejection and obstacles are just, well… hard, right? Wrong.  It doesn’t have to be this way. In this class you learn that “NO” just means “not yet”. You’ll recognize the difference between a complaint, an objection and a stall and how to deal with each. David Patrick – Gasoline Direct Injection: Essential Operation & Testing

Gasoline direct injection is rapidly being adopted by most vehicle manufactures in an attempt to meet more stringent CAFÉ and EPA emissions standards. This course covers the commonly used components of a GDI system and makes their function and operation easy to understand. Learn how GDI fuel injector function and control differs from older PFI systems. Explore case studies which illustrate how high pressure fuel pump function and timing affects engine performance. This course is intended for working technicians as well as customer facing personnel who would like to improve their communication skills regarding gasoline direct injection systems and their potential problems.

Jim Morton – Sherlock Holmes Diagnostics

In this seminar with Jim Morton of Morton’s Automotive Technical Services (alas, Sherlock Holmes with a Wrench) we will be going into detail of General Testing procedure vs Pinpoint Testing procedures. The theme behind this seminar is whether or not we have actually found the problem or the EFFECT of the problem.

The main topics that will be covered are:

Engine Integrity Testing – Performing relative and running compression test properly for better diagnostics of the newer active intake manifolds. Detecting common carbon build-up problems due to today’s fuels and consumers using the wrong octane in their vehicles.

Ignition System Testing – Secondary ignition testing is becoming harder and harder due to system designs. We will go into using the ignition systems Primary as our window into diagnostics.

Fuel Delivery Testing – We will be going over all of the latest testing procedures and how to use our equipment as an x-ray machine to look into the system for problems.

Dirk Fuchs – Drivetrain Technology

All fundamental facts about the tasks and the functions of a clutch system will be defined. We will cover physical foundations of a clutch, specifically how to calculate the transferable torque of the clutch. This is the key to understanding the whole system, and to decrease mounting mistakes.
